Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most common questions about Penge: how the app connects to your bank, how your data is kept safe, how budgets and categories work, and what it costs. If you cannot find what you are looking for, download the app and try it for yourself.
Getting started
- What is Penge?
- Penge is a personal finance app for iPhone. It brings your bank accounts together in one place so you can see your balances, transactions and spending, set budgets and follow where your money goes. You download it from the App Store.
- How do I get started with Penge?
- Download Penge from the App Store, then connect a bank account by logging in with your bank's own login. If your bank is not supported, you can create manual accounts or upload account statements instead. Once your accounts are in, you get one combined overview, including your net worth.
Banks and connections
- Which banks can I connect to Penge?
- Penge connects to more than 2500 banks in over 30 countries through Open Banking, including most major European banks. You can connect accounts from several banks at once and see them in one overview.
- How do I connect my bank?
- You connect through Open Banking and log in with your bank's own login, such as BankID in Norway and Sweden or MitID in Denmark. The connection is read-only, so it can read your balances and transactions but cannot move money or pay bills.
- Can I connect accounts from several banks at once?
- Yes. You can connect accounts from several banks, and even several countries, and see them all in one combined overview, including your net worth.
- What if my bank is not supported?
- If your bank does not support Open Banking, you can create manual accounts or upload account statements instead. Manual and connected accounts work side by side in the same overview.
- Why isn't my newest transaction showing?
- Transactions are fetched from your bank roughly every 6 hours. New transactions may take some time to appear, as your bank needs to confirm them first, and banks rarely confirm during weekends and holidays.
- Why do I have to reconnect my bank?
- European open banking rules require you to confirm your bank connection roughly every 90 days. When it expires, the account shows as “Previously connected” and stops syncing. Just reconnect it from Banks and accounts to keep transactions coming in.
- Why doesn't my credit card show up?
- Many banks don't share credit cards through open banking, so they can't be connected automatically. You can still track a credit card by adding it as a manual account and uploading its transactions from a file.
Security and privacy
- Is it safe to connect my bank to Penge?
- Yes. Penge connects through Open Banking, regulated by the EU directive PSD2. You log in with your bank's own login, your credentials are never stored, the connection is read-only, and your data is encrypted. You can read the full details on our security and privacy page.
- Can Penge move my money or pay bills?
- No. The connection is read-only. It can read your balances and transactions, but it cannot move money, make payments or pay bills.
- Does Penge see or store my bank password?
- No. You log in with your bank's own login, for example BankID or MitID, and your credentials are never stored.
- How long does the connection last, and can I revoke it?
- Consent is time-limited, usually 90 days, and can be renewed. You can revoke it at any time, either in the app or directly with your bank.
- Can I delete my data or my account?
- Yes. You can delete your data or your entire account directly in the app's settings.
- Does Penge use AI, and can I turn it off?
- Penge uses AI in two places: to read PDF statements you upload yourself, and for category suggestions. AI-based category suggestions are off by default and have to be turned on by you. Without them you still get suggestions, based on your own earlier categorisations. If you turn them on, every digit is stripped from the text before it is sent, so account numbers never follow along, and your balances are never sent.
Categories, budgets and statistics
- Does Penge sort my transactions into categories automatically?
- Penge suggests categories for your transactions and only applies them automatically when it is sure, and you can edit any suggestion or create your own categories. The suggestions are built from your own earlier categorisations and work without AI. You can also turn on AI-based suggestions under Settings to make them more accurate. They are off by default, and you can turn them off again at any time.
- Can I set budgets in Penge?
- Yes. You can set a budget for each category and see during the month whether you are on track. You can also try our budget calculator to plan the split first.
- What's the difference between tags and categories?
- Every transaction has one category, like Groceries or Transport, and your statistics and budgets are built on categories. Tags are optional labels you can add on top, and a transaction can have several. Use them to group spending across different categories. For example, tag a whole trip “Italy 2025”, or shared car costs “Car”, without touching the category.
- Can I count only my share of a shared account?
- Yes. Open the account under Banks and accounts, edit it, and add a statistics modifier. Set it to 50% and only half of every amount on that account counts towards your statistics. It's handy for a joint account you split with someone. You can also do this per transaction with a smart tag, which is a tag that carries its own modifier, so anything you tag with it counts at the share you set.
- What is the “Excluded from statistics” group?
- It's a built-in category group for money you don't want counted, such as transfers between your own accounts, expenses you get paid back, or duplicates. Any transaction you put in a category under that group is left out of all your statistics, budgets and totals. You can add your own categories to it, for example a Reimbursements category, and anything filed there stops affecting your numbers.
- What does “unlink transactions” mean?
- When you move money between two connected accounts, Penge spots the matching pair and merges them into one “Account A → Account B” row, so a transfer doesn't look like both income and spending. You usually don't need to unlink anything. “Unlink transactions” just splits the pair back into two separate transactions, which is only useful if you want to give them their own category or tags.
Pricing and availability
- Is Penge free?
- Yes. We're not making money off you: we don't sell your data and we don't show ads, so you are never the product. Running it does cost real money, though, about $3,000 in 2025 and more in 2026, mostly to sync your transactions from your bank. So at some point we may have to charge for the app or for parts of it. Whatever we do, you'll pay with money rather than with your data. And your data stays yours: you can download all of it or delete it at any time, whether you pay or not.
- Which devices does Penge work on? Is there an Android or web version?
- Penge is currently available for iPhone, downloaded from the App Store. An Android version is on the way and is planned for autumn 2026.
- Which languages is Penge available in?
- The app is available in Norwegian, English, Swedish and Danish.
